In my class today I used one of her ideas called "Talking Pictures". This is a strategy where we show the students a picture and we talk about their ideas, what can they see. They point to the different parts of that picture as a statement is being said.
The students talk about it with their peers and we regroup again as a class. This time I read a very basic paragraph based on the picture. The students point with their fingers and then talk about it with their peers.
The next part involves introducing new and interesting vocabularies in a revised paragraph. The students listen to these new words and try to use them in their discussions.
The students were engaged and the picture kept them focused on the task at hand. They had words on the board to refer to. They followed this with their writing.

It is raining. The girl is holding an umbrella. She is looking at a building. She is wearing gumboots on her feet. The dog is watching a ladybug. There is water on the road and there is a leaf in the water.
Revised Version
It is a wet, rainy day. The girl is holding an umbrella to protect herself from the rain. She is observing a tall building with lots of windows and two big doors. She is wearing snug gumboot on her feet to keep them dry. The cuddly, little dog is watching a tiny ladybug fluttering its wings. There are puddles on the road and a leaf is floating on one of those puddles.
